Providing high quality supervision for field-based experiences is challenging. We've developed a web-based tool that supports remote supervision and high quality feedback for people in field placements. The Video Analysis Tool (VAT) is an advanced version of how we used to capture our student teaching experience on a huge videocamera and watch the playback on a VCR with a counter! Thanks to recent technological advancements we can do all of this more efficiently and collect more powerful information.

Using VAT you can view a classroom live and conduct a performance assessment with a valid instrument - all you need is a classroom and a supervisor with an Internet connection. Teachers can also use any type of camcorder (one you have at home or at school), upload video, and request feedback. VAT is completely web-based, easy to use, and increases the substance of the discussion about practice. Very quickly supervisor and preparing educator (e.g., teacher, leader, counselor) progress from talking about global topics such as 'good teaching' or classroom management to the specifics of instructional strategies (e.g., the use of direct questions). The Video Analysis Tool (VAT) has been used by several thousand preparing educators, faculty, faculty supervisors, cooperating teachers, building administrators, peer coaches, and K12 teachers. People have found the tool increases the quantity and quality of the feedback. Teachers see their own instruction as it really happened. Student teachers are able to upload a video of their classroom and receive useful assistance "on demand". Leaders can practice finding critical events in teaching and learning with videos pre-coded by experts, thereby increasing the credibility of their assessments. Counselors have shown me the diagnostic applications of VAT and how fidelity of treatments can increase. It has been very rewarding work.

Our research and practitioner collaborations have demonstrated this tool can support the growth of our educators and serve as a sustainable support mechanism. More recently, colleges of education have pointed out the potential cost savings on fuel and travel. We hadn't developed the tool for this reason, but it has become apparent some are considering the financial impact of providing high quality supervision.
